Chapter 25

WHEN we were back in our apartment, Marco said, “I’ve got to study these reports.” He looked at his watch. “Why don’t you order us a light lunch to be served at twelve?”

“I’ll take care of it. Mind if I glance at those reports?”

“Help yourself.”

He went into the den, spread the reports out on the desk, and began to skim through them while I went to answer a knock at the door. When I opened it, a man in a FedEx uniform entered the room, pushing a dolly containing two large boxes ahead of him. “Sign here, please,” he said.

I signed for the shipment and closed the door behind him when he left. Then I opened the boxes, which contained, as expected, suits, shirts, ties, and dress shoes, plus stacks of underwear and socks. Il Duca was a thorough man. When the suits and shirts were laid out on the bed, I went to the telephone, called downstairs, and arranged to have someone available to press them after our one o’clock meeting in the boardroom was over. I also ordered lunch to be served at twelve. Then I went back to the den, picked up a report, and began to read. By the time I finished the last report, Marco was already going through them a second time, making notes in his laptop as he went.

Lunch arrived, and was set up on the table in the sitting room. I carried a plate of sandwiches into the den and set them on the desk along with a bottle of water. Marco grabbed a sandwich from the plate and began to take bites from it without breaking his concentration, just as he had often done when he was in medical school and studying nonstop. I went to answer the door yet again and told Giuseppe to come in.

“I’ve got that hard drive back,” he said, “and I need to put it back in the computer.”

“Go ahead,” I said. “Don’t mind Marco, he’s deep into studying a bunch of reports.”

Giuseppe went to the desk, knelt on the floor, and carefully reinstalled the hard drive in the computer. This finally caused Marco to look up from what he was doing.

“What’s up?” he asked.

“Just putting the hard drive back in place.”

“Did they find anything on it?”

“A lot of stuff pertaining to Conti affairs. What they did is replicate this drive on another drive for safekeeping, then they wiped this drive of all the confidential material and reorganized it so there are no blank spaces showing. I’ll have a full report on what they found in a day or so. By the time you’ve dealt with the police, I should have the replacement hard drive in hand.”

“Good show. What time is it?”

“Time to get ready for the meeting,” I said.

“I’m as ready as I’ll ever be. Give me a minute to print out my notes.”

“Print the notes and then come to the bedroom. We have to get dressed.”

“Dressed?”

“Our suits are here and we ought to wear them to the meeting, even if they are a bit rumpled.
